How new recruits begin their journey at DevOpsGroup

Starting a new job is something we all face at some point in our lives. Regardless of your role or experience, it can be a both an exciting and daunting prospect.

Not only do you have to get to know new colleagues and a new work environment, but perhaps you’ve also relocated to a new location. Then you need to get to grips with the fundamentals of your new role and a fresh set of company processes.

While some things may be similar to your previous company, you’re going to be exposed to different tools, applications and policies. At a technology business like DevOpsGroup, cloud solutions and agile methodologies form an important part of daily operations – and getting used to this way of working can take some time.

When these factors are combined, it’s easy to feel a little nervous about beginning the next step in your career. But that’s why onboarding and induction processes exist. They’re designed to ease new starters into the team and workplace culture. You’re given the knowledge, skills, tools and general know-how to hit the ground running.

The length of onboarding processes varies, but we provide a two-week period to ease new recruits into our cultures and values. This starts from the moment you accept an offer, all the way through to you sitting at your desk.

Although there are formal sessions covering areas such as collaborative tools and finance, there’s additional time you can use to get to know other staff members. In some workplace environments, this is usually the hard part; however, everyone here is happy to answer questions and help you feel at home. So, what does this process entail?

Fitting in

At DevOpsGroup, the first two weeks for new starters are very relaxed and informal, functioning as a chance to get to know members of the team and work processes. If you plan on working remotely, you’ll also have your travel and accommodation booked prior to onboarding.

When you first come into the office, you get to meet your team members and everyone else in the office. It’s an opportunity for you integrate yourself within the company culture, develop relationships with the people around you and understand the everyday tools we use.

These are underpinned by cloud technology and agile working methodologies, enabling collaboration and accelerating productivity. If you’re entering a technology role at the company, you’ll have no trouble using them. However, for those taking on non-tech positions, working this way may seem overwhelming.

Either way, you’re provided with a series of onboarding sessions to ensure you have everything needed to produce amazing work. These sessions also cover topics such as finance and human resources. Within your first three months, you’ll also go on the BCS Agile Foundation course.

Although the general onboarding sessions are mandatory, you’ll have a lot of free time to explore the office, ask all the burning questions and improve your self-development. That could be anything from arranging a one-to-one meeting with someone in a similar role to learning how to use the coffee machine. Whatever the case, we aim to give new starters the sense that we’re a family. Across all departments and roles, we facilitate a friendly and diverse environment.

Getting the most out of onboarding

Lucy Young, people success, is one of team members responsible for running the onboarding process. She says: “We feel very much like a family organisation. The way we approach things and operate is genuinely different to other businesses. We like to be innovative and like people to be able to voice their opinions.

“Our People team actively encourages employees to provide feedback about the onboarding process and other aspects of company culture so that we can take steps to improve processes. It’s just a nice atmosphere and an amazing place to work.”

When it comes to getting the most out of this process, she encourages new recruits to ask as many questions as possible and approach team members for advice. “I’d always say don’t be scared to approach people; everybody is always available for questions and queries about anything,” continues Lucy.

“The onboarding process is really relaxed, and things are flexible. Of course, there are compulsory sessions, but make the process work for you and don’t be afraid to approach people. To us, team work really matters, and this starts off with onboarding.”

Gareth Saxby, senior engineer, recently joined the team and feels like the onboarding process has prepared him well for his role. “I thought the onboarding was great. Everyone is really friendly and forthcoming; if you’ve got any questions, you know that any member of the team will answer them for you,” he says.

“You’re also given plenty of time to fit into the company and understand all the processes. And there isn’t a shortage of onboarding sessions, either. To help familiarise yourself with your team and expectations, you’re introduced to everyone you’re going to be working with and get to speak to someone who’s in a similar role early on. Overall, it’s been the best onboarding experience I’ve ever experienced.”
